Much to the dismay of explodable red barrels and oppressive Governmental forces everywhere. Developer Avalanche has stated that we "shouldn't be surprised" if we hear of another Just Cause title
soon. Studio Head Christofer Sundberg gave website Develop the goss.
The studio was in a joyful mood as Just Cause 2 secured the top spot on the UK game charts in its first week of release. That coupled with a Metacritic score of 81 has Avalanche breathing a sigh of relief and turning one eye to the future.
Sundberg, in the interview, not only talked about the possibility of a third game but the fact that a third game pretty much has to be made by Avalanche. He said that "the studio lives and breathes the Just Cause franchise, and handing that over to another developer would spoil it. No one has the attachment to this IP as we do." He believes that the studio has developed a strong connection, especially seeing as Sundberg himself pitched the original idea of the game. It is for these reasons that Sundberg stated "we are absolutely interested in working with the Just Cause IP again."
Even without playing the full version of Just Cause 2, I've only accessed the demo, news of a third already excites me. The demo was some of the most fun I've had in a game with it's crazy mix of open world sandbox gameplay and the unique grappling hook and parachute. The stunts and things you could do were, to an extent, limited by what you could come up with as there was a lot of variety, even in such a small portion of the game. If the game can secure a few more weeks in the charts, in the US as well as the UK, then a third will be pretty much a shoe-in. The game would have received enough of a financial and fan success to warrant a third game.
I agree with Sundberg's statement that the IP should stay with them and it will be interesting to see just Avalanche would do with a third shot. They managed to take some of the better elements of the first, like the grappling hook and parachute, and make them more fun and polished to give the game a good core. The driving, gunfights and voice acting were pretty average from my experience so hopefully these would be some of the main areas Avalanche would address in a third entry. In any case another opportunity to perform crazy grappling hook based exploding parachute stunts is fine with me.
