New Transformers Game Actually Good?

The game, dubbed Transformers: War for Cybertron, is being developed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC by High Moon Studios and will be published by Activision. The game is set for release in 2010 and has people excited about a Transformers game for the first time, well ever.

The game, in its design, is a cross between the classic 80's TV show and the Michael Bay live action movies. As far as gameplay the developers are seeking inspiration from the highly successful Gears of War franchise, utilizing the third person over the shoulder shooter style that the Gears series made popular. Where War for Cybertron differs from the Gears series is in its reliance on cover. The Gears series places huge importance on cover. The run and gun style, which many first person shooters rely on, is fairly ineffective in Gears and using cover is vital to staying alive. War for Cybertron will place less importance on cover due to the Transformers ability to transform. If a battle gets too intense just transform and get on out of there, taking the battle to a new place and shifting the focus from patient brute force battles to a focus on agility, speed and careful timing of transformations.

As the trailer points out the game takes place before the Transformers have landed on Earth and High Moon have developed an entirely new storyline, one which hasn't appeared in a TV show or comic before, for the game. This also explains the designs of the Transformers, as they haven't reached Earth yet they can't transform into Mac trucks and Abrams tanks so they resemble the Cybertron equivalent whilst keeping their classic colour scheme. Players will be able to play two different single player campaigns, one for the Autobots and one for the Decepticons, which will have intertwining storylines. I'm guessing the Decepticons will be trying to make some weapon or something and the Autobots will be trying to stop them and you'll play both sides of the story. There are also promises of online co-op, a staple of the industry right now, and various other modes, I'm assuming online multiplayer.

Like most people I'm itching for a good Transformer game. The idea, giant battling robots who can transform into vehicles, just screams video game but so far we have been disappointed. High Moon's trailer looks promising, Optimus Prime slicing a Decepticon in half with a battle axe is just pure awesome, but until we see some actual gameplay footage and get a few more details I'm skeptical. I don't want to be sucked in to the hype to then find out the game is terrible but here's hoping it'll be good. Currently the website just has a countdown and a sign up button to receive further details when they become available.
