It may have broken the all time midnight opening record with a reported total of US$22.2 million, somewhat better than last years amazing Dark Knight which was the previous record holder on US$18.5 million, but Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince couldn't manage the best opening weekend of the year. It managed to generate $79,475,000 in the US, quite a handy effort, but that wasn't enough to beat X:Men Origins- Wolverine, US$85,058,003, or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, US$108,966,307 for the highest weekend gross of 2009. Personally I thought this latest Harry Potter would have been a shoe-in to open in the $100 million region. I mean it's the sixth film so it's had a chance to draw in not only fans of the book but plenty of time to draw in new fans to the series. It has also been ridiculously well reviewed, currently sitting at 84% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes making it the third most positively reviewed Potter film, compared to Transformers 20%, and has had a massive ad campaign tied to it where fans wait with baited breath for the next little tid bit of information. It must also make you wonder how the film would have gone if it was released on it's original release date, November 21st 2008. This move alienated a lot of fans as they were eagerly awaiting the films release only to have it delayed over half a year. Surprisingly it has only had the 5th highest opening weekend for a Potter film, someway behind the Goblet of Fire's US$102,685,961 and will have a fight on it's hands to become the highest grossing Potter film needing almost US$1 billion in worldwide gross. At least it should manage to be the highest grossing film of the year with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince currently sitting at worldwide US$396,662,000 which is already halfway to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's worldwide total of US$746,925,021.
